We are talented artists in sixth class!

In sixth class we are learning to use our imagination to create pieces of art. Múinteoir Yvonne gives the children a theme, a material to work with and then allows children to create their own masterpiece! Examples are given of what might be created and children can make a sketch or a mental plan before they complete their art. Here are just some of the great pieces we have completed so far this year. At the start of the year we discussed our name and our unique traits. We then completed a piece of art around our name using marker and crayons. When the Galway hurling team reached the All-Ireland Final in early September we made collages of hurling symbols using magazines and newspaper. During Friendship week we created a painting based on the theme of friendship and combined the images together to make a friendship quilt. Last week we experimented using charcoal to explore the types of lines, marks and shades we could create and we then created a Halloween image using charcoal. We

We have been learning about plants!

In sixth class, for SESE, we have been studying about plants. We learned  how to plant a tree on National Tree Day, October 5th, using the Tree Council of Ireland website . We researched and found information on a tree in our local area for homework. We read  about different plants found in an  urban environment and in a tropical  rainforest. We discussed what a plant needs to live and be healthy and we learned about the different parts of a plant. We carried out an experiment to see how fast water travels up a stem. We used water, celery, a glass jar and red food colouring to perform this experiment. Take a look at what happens to the plant in this photograph!
